Chicago Map

So, here's where many
of the icons went...onto
a ethnic-location Chicago map.

Squid

Ah, the delicious squid...well, not delicious
so much, but texturous. Amazing that
I managed to make this into a favorite
foodstuff for my kids.

an apple today

...once again, I don't know why
the apple is associated with
Polish ethnicity, but there
you have it!

Jalapeno

Our amigo, the jalapeno.

Kettle

...I think this was
a generic "melting pot"
notion for multiple cultures...

Teapot

...also for the Oriental
section...Surprise!

Bowl of Rice

...this one was used for
a generic Oriental food mart...

Garlic

...another icon for the Italians,
although many cultures would
proudly claim this wonderful bulb...

Mezzaluna

This, I learned, is a mezzaluna...
for chopping foodstuffs. Ann brought
one back from Tuscany.

Espresso Brewer

For years I never drank coffee,
but then we were at the late Gus's
party and he brewed up espresso
on the stovetop and I enjoyed that
as a pick-me-up after drinking. We
had one of these at home, never used,
so I tried it from time to time and
then one night it exploded! Oops!

Horse Icon

...and for some reason
this is considered a
suitable icon for
Scandinavians, though
one would think not.

Cod

...another unused icon, this
for the Scandinavian section...

Camel

...icon for "A Cook's Guide to Chicago",
a Middle-Eastern section, not included...
